The Town of Andover’s Geographic Information System (GIS) began in 1998 as part of a comprehensive Town-wide base mapping project. Information captured from aerial photography in the initial phase of the project included buildings, roads, topography, water bodies, vegetation, paved areas, recreation areas, railroads, and infrastructure. Phase II completed parcels (digitized tax maps), wetlands (digitized 1998 wetland maps), and additional features captured through GPS collection. Since the original aerial flight, Town staff has developed other data layers (examples: zoning, overlay districts, school districts, precincts, open space and recreation), as well as maintained parcel and infrastructure data.

This website provides access to GIS data, interactive mapping, prepared maps, and other GIS resources by selecting from the following features:

  • About GIS: Link to ESRI’s site on “What is GIS”
  • Interactive Mapping: This function was added to Andover’s website in 2004 and allows the user to view information and print maps from a series of data layers. Recent design changes added more tools, printing options, and GIS data. This site is best used at a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 or higher, and uses pop-up windows to display information. Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher is recommended for optimal performance.
  • Map Library: Ability to download maps in pdf (Adobe Reader) format
  • Data Layers: Information about the GIS data, including the source and edited dates.
  • MassGIS: Link to the Massachusetts GIS office which offers a wide range of GIS features, from downloading data and technical articles to an interactive mapping site.
